Module Aims
|
(a) To introduce students to the nature and role of financial management in an organization.(b) To provide students with the theoretical framework, the practical understanding and the analytical tools necessary for planning and controlling investment and its financing in a business context.

Learning Outcomes
|
Students should:(a) understand the nature and importance of the financial management role in an organisation;(b) understand the general financial environment within which business operates and have the ability to participate meaningfully as members of a management team in the financial management process;(c) be able to apply financial management principles and techniques to capital investment decisions; to working capital management; and to financing mix decisions.

Introduction: Organizational and financial goals; nature, purposes and origin of financial management; relationship with other disciplines; investment and financing decisions; the finance function in an organization; financial markets; the financial services sector; capital markets; legal and tax environment.Valuation and Capital Investment Decisions: The valuation problem; time value of money; future and present values; valuation models; capital budgeting process; problems in evaluating investment proposals; techniques of investment appraisal; evaluation and comparison of techniques; ranking proposals; impact of taxation and inflation; introduction to dealing with uncertainty and risk; investment decisions in practice; post completion evaluation.Sources of Long-Term Finance: Sources and availability of long-term finance including share capital, retained earnings, debt, government sources and venture capital; leasing decisions; factors influencing the financing mix decision.Cost of Capital: Concept of the cost of capital; cost of equity (including CAPM) and debt; weighted average cost of capital; capital structure and cost of capital.
