Module Aims
|
This module focuses on the needs of children experiencing ill health cared for in a variety of health care settings. Students will have the opportunity to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the nursing care of the child experiencing ill health in partnership with the family.

Learning Outcomes
|
On completion of this module and following a period of personal study the student will be able to: Demonstrate an understanding of the pathophysiological changes in the child during childhood illness. Demonstrate the knowledge and clinical skills required to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate evidence based care, in partnership with the child and their family in conjunction with the interdisciplinary team in a variety of health care settings. Understand the evidence based principles of assessment and management of pain in children along the age continuum. Appreciate the need to support the child and family in their experience of ill health

Introduction to pain assessment and management in children Impact of hospitalisation on the child and family Family centred care, working in partnership with the child and family. Pathophysiological changes in the child with childhood illness in relation to alterations in respiratory and gastrointestinal function. Nursing assessment strategies, care planning and delivery techniques, evaluation of care Relevant clinical skills when caring for a child with acute / chronic respiratory and gastrointestinal dysfunction. Effects of childhood illness on the child and family Facilitation of play and education for the child in a variety of health care settings
