Module Aims
  • To critically analyse the discipline of psychiatry, comparing and contrasting the psychiatric approach to mental health with that of psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic approaches.
  • To evaluate the DSM-IV and ICD-l O classification systems for psychiatric disorders, emphasising the aetiology, course and outcome of disorders considered within such conceptual frameworks.
  • To explore the structures, systems and processes associated with the provision of psychiatric services in institutional and community-based settings, in order to develop skills in liaising with these services.


Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module and following a period of personal study students will be able to: ?

  • Describe and critically evaluate the psychiatry-based approach to mental health.
  • Debate the principles and practice of patient assessment and management in psychiatry, including suitability for psychotherapy
  • Appraise the relationship of counselling and psychotherapy to psychiatry.
  • Analyse the rationale for classifying psychiatric disorders.
  • Discuss the categories of psychiatric disorders identified in the DSM-IV and ICD-lO classification systems, including the symptomology, aetiology, course and outcome of the principal disorders that have been Identified.
  • Use the skills that are involved in making judgments and decisions regarding the appropriateness of referring a client to a psychiatric service. 
  • Use the structures and systems of the psychiatric services to make referrals and liase with professionals working in a variety of psychiatric service settings.
  •  Analyse the rationale that underpins bio/psycho/social psychiatric interventions

Indicative Syllabus
· The development of the psychiatric model of service provision. · The current roles and functions of the psychiatric services in Ireland.· Biomedical approaches to intervention (e.g., disease models of mental health; the use of pharmacological treatments). · The role of psychoanalytic approaches in psychiatry. · Adaptive processes and mental mechanisms. · The ''mental disorder'' approach: Concepts and operationalisation of psychopathology in psychiatry. · DSM-IV and ICD-lO as classification systems for describing mental health · Difficulties with classifying mental health difficulties: The examples of labelling, dual diagnosis and personality disorder. · Symptomology, aetiology, course and outcomes of major mental disorders, such as depression, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders. · Diagnosis and treatment of PTSD -Post Traumatic Stress Disorder · The use of psychopharmacological therapies in the psychiatric model of therapy and treatment. · Contextual influences and current trends in the development of approaches to psychiatric therapeutic care and intervention. · Liasing with psychiatric services; issues that arise in a multi-disciplinary environment. · Classification issues in mental health, such as the use ofDSM-1V and ICD-lO.
