Module Aims
1.- To provide an introduction to the background of Latin American diversity.To provide an overview and examine the current dominant political, social and economic trends in Latin America.2.- To study specific regions in order to address key issues of economic development, social progress and governance. 3. To study relevant cultural manifestations of the Latin American?s past and current political and social reality.

Learning Outcomes
This module will enable students to:1. Develop awareness of and interest in decisive political, economic and social issues of Latin American societies.2. To consider critically the intervention and role of more developed powers in their relations with Latin America.3 Students will reflect on the use of cultural activities and production in addressing issues of political and social tension.

Indicative Syllabus
The module will draw on literary, cultural and political documents and materials, including film, to examine current political and cultural debates in Latin America.Discussion will concentrate on issues such as:1. Political regimes and transformations in Latin America: Freedom, democracy, development, good governance and security2. United States and European Union relations with Latin America3. Cultural as a means of resistance4. Latino cultureTeaching and Learning MethodsCombination of introductory lectures, student class presentations and seminar discussion.Discussion will be based on analysis of selected texts and materials.Language requirement: Primary and secondary literature will be mainly in Spanish.
