Module Aims
  • To provide skills in cell biology and biochemistry
  • To teach and discuss methods in microbiological techniques.
  • To show the use of genetic and microbiological analytical method
  • To teach immunological analysis methods and their applications.

Learning Outcomes

Students should gain :·

  • A knowledge of cell culture, electrophoretic, radioisotopic and chromatographic methods·
  • An understanding of microorganism preservation, disinfectant evaluation, innoculum development, and activated sludge estimation ·
  • An overview of the methods of the generation of DNA probes, Southern blotting and hybridisation methods, and microbiological assays for antibiotics and mutagens·
  • A knowledge of the isolation and characterisation of polyclonal antibodies, conjugation of antibodies with enzyme labels, and immunoanalytical methods.

NOTE
Assume that a 5 credit module load represents approximately 75 hours' work, which includes all teaching, in-course assignments, laboratory work or other specialised training and an estimated private learning time associated with the module.

Indicative Syllabus

The students perform cell culture methods, electrophoresis, anion and cation exchange chromatography and radioisotopic assays.

  • The microbial organisms in activated sludge will be estimated, and methods of innoculum development and microorganism preservation performed.
  • Southern blotting and hybridisation techniques with non-radioactive probes will be carried out· Immunoglobulins will be isolated from animal serum, chemically conjugated to enzymes and used in enzyme linked immunosorbant assays
