Module Aims
To enable students to undertake a research project in the field of Biotechnology. To develop skills in laboratory or computational research. To develop skills in presentation and analysis of the results of scientific research.

Learning Outcomes
Students should be able to:· develop new experimental or computational methods· identify and solve problems in experimental design · accurately record experimental data· plan experiments competently· analyse and interpret results competently· critically discuss results· present results in a clear and concise manner· use information sources competently.

Assume that a 15 credit module load represents approximately 225 hours' work, which includes all teaching, in-course assignments, laboratory work or other specialised training and an estimated private learning time associated with the module.

Indicative Syllabus
· The student will choose a research project from a list submitted by academic staff. Having undertaken the Literature Survey module (BE491) in semester 7, the student will have researched the background to the project. · The student will spend 20-25 hours per week for an 8-week period undertaking the project in the research laboratory managed by their academic supervisor.· At the end of this period, the student will present their results at a series of seminars to an audience of their peers and academic staff.· Following the oral presentations, the student will submit a typed version of the work for inspection by 2 internal and 2 external examiners.
