7 To provide a detailed working knowledge of methods used in advanced immunoanalysis - their applications, advantages and limitations.

Learning Outcomes
Students should gain: Practical experience of the production of monoclonal antibodies. Detailed knowledge of the production and characterisation of antibodies and enzyme-labelled antibodies. 'Hands-on' experience of advanced aspects of immunoanalysis. Experience in mixing theoretical and practical skills.

Indicative Syllabus
¿ Production of monoclonal antibodies. Students will perform and monitor a myeloma/spleen fusion.¿ Isolation of specific antibodies using salt precipitation and affinity chromatography.¿ Antibody characterisation including SDS electrophoresis, HPLC and ELISA.¿ Production and characterisation of antibody-enzyme conjugates.¿ Use of the Biacore ''Real-Time'' Sensor system in immunoanalysis.¿ Immunodiagnostic methods, including immunoblotting techniques.¿ Immunofluroescence techniques.
