Module Aims

This module sets the level A2+ from the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) as its minimum exit level. It aims to:

  • Consolidate and expand the skills acquired in FR103
  • Continue to increase language competence and fluency with greater emphasis on spoken production
  • Continue to develop awareness and knowledge of essential aspects of contemporary and the Francophone world
  • Improve pronunciation and intonation


Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students will be able to:

  • Understand the main points of radio or TV programmes on chosen topics
  • Read and understand increasingly complex texts, identifying key-words, structure and main points
  • Analyse and synthesize a newspaper article and express an opinion
  • Participate effectively in a group discussion on a chosen topic with increasing spontaneity
  • Demonstrate greater grammatical accuracy in context

Indicative Syllabus

The course is conducted through French.

Classroom sessions are interactive and learner-centered.

The syllabus focuses on increasing the language fluency and accuracy as well as covering essential cultural aspects through a variety of tasks, class activities and group projects.

Students will be asked to work in pairs/groups and complete a variety of language assignments/tasks. These can include but are not limited to:

  • presentations of newspaper articles
  • written/aural/video comprehension exercises based on newspaper articles/radio/television news or current affairs programmes
  • organising debates on a prepared topic
  • devising and preparing specific language exercises for class use

  • In addition to the course material handed out in class, a wide range of authentic electronic/digital resources will be accessible via Moodle (http://moodle.dcu.ie). Students will also be encouraged to research and use authentic materials relevant to their projects and to interact with French native speakers whenever possible.
