Module Aims
  • To gain a deeper understanding of topical issues in contemporary Japanese Society.
  • To analyse the ways in which these issues are portrayed by Japanese and Western media sources.
  • To assist language acquisition in the target language.
  • To enhance research abilities in both source and target languages.
  • To provide a platform for the development of individual interests in topics concerning Japan.


Learning Outcomes
  • Improved reading and oral language skills.
  • Improved research and presentation skills in source and target languages.
  • Increased capacity to analyse issues from a number of standpoints through the examination of different media approaches within Japanese society and on an international scale.

Indicative Syllabus
  • Examination of a number of topical issues in contemporary Japanese society ranging from the political system, popular culture, gender relations, to changing social structures.
  • Authentic material chosen from Japanese newspapers and periodicals supplemented by similar texts from English newspapers and periodicals.
