Module Aims
The aims of this module are:- To acquaint students with the principles underpinning land law; - To teach students the law regulating ownership, possession and succession to real property;- To teach students the common law rules, rules of equity and legislation regulating real property;- To teach students how these rules contribute to the efficient regulation and ownership of property; and,- To teach students how to use the legal principles when regulating the ownership and possession of real property.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the module, students must:- Appreciate the function of land law;- Know and understand the basic principles that underpin land law;- Know and understand the case law and legislation; and,- Be able to solve problems affecting the ownership and possession of real property with reference to case law and legislation.

Indicative Syllabus
- Nature and function of land law and property; historical development; fundamental doctrines: doctrine of estates, fee simple, fee farm grant, fee tail and life estate; influence of equity and equitable principles; trusts; equitable interests and estates;- Ownership and co-ownership; joint tenancy and tenancy in common; extinguishment of interests in land: adverse possession, merger; licences and proprietary estoppel; mortgages: legal and equitable mortgages, judgment mortgages; settlements of land; family property; future interests; landlord and tenant; registered and unregistered land; covenants; succession law; disabilities;- Legislation (indicative): the Statute of Uses (Ireland), 1634; the Judgment Mortgage (Ireland) Acts, 1850-1858; the Settled Land Act, 1882-1890; the Family Home Protection Act, 1976; the Family Law Act, 1995; the Registration of Title Act, 1964; the Registration of Deeds (Ireland) Act, 1707; Prescription Acts, 1832; the Succession Act, 1965.
