Module Aims
  • Drawing on student's previous theoretical knowledge and clinical experiences this module will critically develop and explore the students care of children with complex health care needs based on current evidence based nursing practice.


Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module and following a period of personal study the student will be able to:

  • Critically demonstrate the ability to apply a detailed knowledge of the pathophysiology of  complex health care needs  when delivering evidence based care to children.
  • Critically examine the knowledge and skills required to assess, plan and deliver evidence based care to a child with complex health care needs , in partnership with the child, family and interdisciplinary team.
  • Critically explore psychological and psychosocial issues that influence the management of care from a personal, professional and cultural practice perspective.
  • Critically examine the legal, ethical and professional issues related to the care of children with complex health care needs.
  • Critically explore the concept of parent / infant attachment and the role of the children's nurse in facilitating and promoting attachment.
  • Critically examine quality of life issues for the child and family.

Assume that a 5 credit module load represents approximately 75 hours' work, which includes all teaching, in-course assignments, laboratory work or other specialised training and an estimated private learning time associated with the module.

Indicative Syllabus
  • Anatomy and physiology of the integumentary and cardiac function as applied to the child.
  • Physiological, social and psychological aspects of  cardiac, dermatological and metabolic diseases and conditions affecting the child.
  • Nursing care of the child with altered cardiac, metabolic and integumentary function.
  • Nursing care of the sick neonate and/or high risk neonate.
  • Common neonatal disorders – thermoregulation, hypoglycaemia, , physiological jaundice, reparatory distress syndrome.
  • Pharmaceutical interventions.
  • Interdisciplinary contribution.
  • Health education and promotion as related to children and neonates with complex health care needs.
  • Effects of complex health care needs on the child and family.
  • Nursing care of the child or neonate following medical and surgical interventions.
