Module Aims
To explore the paradigm of therapeutic interventions for people with intellectual disability who experience mental health problems in order to develop a more cohesive and contextualised understanding to inform and guide specialised nursing approaches to care.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module and following a period of personal study it is intended that the student will be able to:7Identify strategies that enhance interpersonal communication and to reflect critically upon therapeutic relationship skills.7Demonstrate a critical awareness of the essential nursing priorities in the care of individual with mental health problems and intellectual disability and their families. 7Critically discuss how assessment methodologies can support the development of a comprehensive bio-psycho-social profile of the person with intellectual disability and mental health problems.7Demonstrate a critical awareness of the value of utilising risk assessment, risk management and risk reduction methods in planning care 7Identify and implement strategies for building community support networks for people with intellectual disability and mental health problems.7Develop a contextualised understanding of person centred planning. 7Demonstrate an appreciation of the value of collaborative, interdisciplinary approaches to challenging behaviour and mental health problems for people with intellectual disability.7Critically review psycho pharmacological considerations that relate to people with intellectual disability and mental health problems.Critically discuss the goals of current psycho-educational and competency based programmes for persons with intellectual disability and mental health problems, families and carers.

·Interpersonal skills and the responsive dimensions of therapeutic relationships and communicationsAugmentative and alternative communication: concepts and models ·The evolution of a nursing response to people with intellectual disability and mental health problems and or challenging behaviour the role of the nurse in facilitating the development of community support networks, mental health promotion and family psycho education clinical governance, clinical efficiency, competency assessment, performance managementthe nature of integrated bio, psycho, social assessment methodsintegrated bio-psychosocial approaches to challenging behaviour risk assessment, management and reduction methods the nurses role in supporting the individual and his/her family in periods of crisis nursing and individual /family experiencing despair and hopelessness nursing and the individual who cannot control his / her behaviour nursing and the person who has suffered loss or grief nursing and the person who is unable to communicate or reach out nursing and the person who expresses symptoms of mental ill health from organic causes·Collaborative treatment approaches to prevention, early detection, crisis management and specialised long term supports for people with intellectual disability with mental health problems. ·Multi modal therapeutic interventions and Positive Systems Approaches, values and attitudeshumanistic, behavioural, cognitive, educational, ecological and bio-medical. screening, assessment methods and interventions strategiesdesigning multi element support plans·Psychopharmacological approaches applied.·Critical reflection on work related experiences in caring for individuals with complex challenging behaviours
