This module aims to provide students with an introduction to culture and society in contemporary . The module focuses on the following areas

 

 

·        The social and political background to contemporary

·        The contemporary cultural history of

·        Introduction to the academic study of literary texts.



Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module, you will:

·        be able to identify some of the key issues that shaped contemporary Spanish society

·        be able to comment on the impact of these issues on specific groups in Spanish society

·        have read and reflected on a number of Spanish literary texts

Indicative Syllabus

The course provides an introduction to the history and culture of in the 20th century. It surveys key episodes in the development of in the 20th century, including the Spanish Civil War and the early years of the dictatorship so that students are aware of the importance of this period in the history of as a nation. Social and cultural change in since the 1960s will be studied with particular reference to: Spanish identity and the nations of ; gender and sexuality; education; the recent transformation of from a country of net emigration to a country of net immigration.

 

 

In the second part of the course, students will study a number of literary texts including a short story, poetry (in conjuction with the textbook Luciérnagas), extracts from two novels and a study of the novel Los santos inocentes. In addition to standing as accomplished works in themselves, a number of the texts to be studied help illustrate issues that have shaped society in in the 20th century as studied in the first part of the course.
