Indicative Syllabus

The cultural flourish of years of the Second Republic will be discussed using the literary works -and in particular the poetry- of Lorca to exemplify the peak of achievement of this decade. The universal significance of Romancero gitano will be considered alongside its clearly indigenous features. A study of Carmen Laforet''s first novel Nada will allow for a study of the emergence of women writers of the bildungroman in the period as well as providing a forum for the discussion of the literary portrayal of post-Civil War in an era of rigid censorship. The third part of the course will consist of an introduction to the film director Iciar Bollaín, followed by an analysis of one of her films e.g Flores de otro mundo or Te doy mis ojos. Discussion and analysis will consider her artistic portrayal of controversial contemporary issues.
