Module Aims

Module Aims:

1. To provide a comprehensive introduction to the area of exercise psychology.

2. Increase awareness of the contribution of mainstream psychology to the understanding of exercise and health.

3. To provide the student with a sound understanding of the relationship between psychological theory and practical approaches in exercise psychology.

4. To recognise the significance of psychological theories for understanding sport and exercise behaviour.

5. To critically analyse current theory, research and practice within the field of exercise psychology.

6. To write scientific reports on selected topics in exercise psychology.



Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this module students will be able to:7

  • Demonstrate a factual knowledge of exercise psychology.
  • Critically evaluate different psychological theories of exercise psychology
  • Apply the knowledge of theories/principles of psychology of sport, exercise and physical activity
  • Write a scientific report

· An introduction to exercise psychology · The exercise scientist and exercise psychology· Motivations and barriers to exercise· Exercise adherence models 1-3· Cognitive Theories of Motivation and the Physical Self· Acute & Chronic psychological effects of exercise · Physical activity promotion/interventions· Mechanisms for exercise effects · Exercise & psychological well-being · Exercise and depression/anxiety· Exercise effects on other clinical populations.· Negative psychological effects of exercise (exercise dependence)· Rating perceived exertion, energy expenditure in physical activity.
