Module Aims
This course is an introduction to contemporary Irish writing. It will enable students from abroad coming to the subject for the first time to study a wide range of literary works.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students should have gained an insight into the various forces which have shaped modern Irish literature, and they should have familiarised themselves with a variety of literary texts.

Indicative Syllabus
The first three weeks of the course will provide a perspective of the historical, social and cultural background of Irish literature and will give a chronological framework to the study of the literary texts.The remainder of the time is devoted to introduce foreign students to the major authors and themes of modern Irish fiction. The main topics of study will be: Literary Revival, Discontinuities and Tradition, the Comic Tradition and Magic Realism.
