Module Aims

To introduce students to the development of education at primary and post-primary levels in Ireland.
To highlight patterns of development, engagement and provision in relation to the various parties involved in provision since the inception of the primary system.
To encourage students to engage with the various philosophical issues pertaining to schooling as a historically and contemporaneously contested territory.
To raise student awareness of recent issues arsing in educational policy in relation to teaching, curriculum and the teaching body.



Learning Outcomes

Articulate a broad, yet engaged and knowledgeable, understanding of the development of education in Ireland since the inception of the primary system in the nineteenth-century.
Develop and defend rational and well argued positions on educational issues and controversies particularly those pertaining to the positions, roles and responsibilities of interested parties within the educational community.
Articulate a cogent position on the nature of the conflicting and complimentary influences acting on educational provision.
Arrive at an understanding of the relationship between the nature and purposes of education and the wider imperatives and inputs of other agencies.
Develop an understanding of the contemporaneous position of the teaching body in relation to the above.

 The position of teachers and ‘management’ within schools.
 The historical role of the churches in education in Ireland

The changing nature of the educational landscape
