Module Aims
  • To help students develop the listening and speaking skills necessary to meet the demands of undergraduate courses taught in an English speaking academic environment
  • To further develop students' academic reading and writing skills
  • To improve and develop students' study and exam preparation skills
  • To further develop students' awareness of appropriacy and register in relation to their use of English in an academic environment


Learning Outcomes
  • Students should be able to participate in discussions and make short oral presentations effectively.
  • Students should be able to understand spoken English when used in lectures , talks; seminars etc.
  • Students should have developed effective study and exam preparation techniques (e.g. notetaking; highlighting; referencing; summarising; focused reflection etc.)
  • Students should be able to write academic essays using an appropriate style and register and to plan and organise their writing effectively.
  • Students should be able to cope effectively with academic reading texts

Indicative Syllabus
Using a variety of academic listening and reading texts, students will be given extensive practice in all four skills in an integrated fashion. However, in this module particular attention will be paid to the development of academic listening and speaking skills. Specific strategies for dealing with academic texts effectively will be focused on and students will be encouraged to refine their ability to display their knowledge effectively. Students will reflect on their current study skills and exam preparation techniques and encouraged to experiment with alternative techniques and approaches.
