Module Aims
  • To enable students to undertake a research project in an area related to Physical Education and Biology.
  • To develop the necessary skills to design and execute a research project.
  • To develop skills in problems solving, experimental planning and lateral thinking.
  • To develop the ability to present, interpret and discuss research results.
  • To contextualise their research with relevant studies and reports in the literature.
  • To drawn novel interpretations and develop novel hypothesis based on their findings.
  • To develop a team approach where appropriate.

Learning Outcomes

Depending on their choice of research subject, students should gain:

  • The ability to design and execute research experiments in the laboratory, or research projects in the field or in the archives.
  • 'Hands on' experience with routine laboratory equipment or practical understanding of experimentation to complement lectures.
  • The capability of working independently and in a research team.
  • The ability to communicate findings with supervisor and plan complementary experiments and work.
  • The ability to design and plan a project.
  • Develop time management skills necessary to complete the project within given time constraints.
  • Develop skills in accurately recording experimental and other data.

Indicative Syllabus
  • The student will research a directed or chosen project, based on their choice from a list, submitted by various academic staff teaching on the Physical Education and Biology programme, in semester 6 for project 1 (literature review).
  • The student will commence the research project, having undertaken the Literature Review module (SS326) and researched the background to the project.
  • The student will spend 20-25 hours per week for an eight-week period undertaking the project (this includes lectures, meetings with supervisors, tutorials, seminars and laboratory work).
  • On completion of the project, the student will present their results at a series of seminars to an audience of peers and academic staff as well as submitting a typed report of the research, in the form of a scientific paper, for inspection and grading.
