Module Aims
|
- To develop a good understanding of the physical principles underlying heat and mass transfer.
- To understand the methodology and quantitative approach of the process engineer and to be able to use this approach in problem solving.
- To acquire the necessary background for BE271.
|
Learning Outcomes
|
At the end of this course, the student should be able to:·
- Derive basic heat transfer equations from first principles·
- Obtain physical properties of fluids from Thermodynamic Property Tables
- Apply Fourier's and Newton's laws to solve heat transfer problems
- Solve heat transfer problems using empirical correlations
- Solve heat transfer problems using trial and error methods
- Design simple heat exchangers
- Solve simple diffusion problems
- Formulate mass transfer problems in terms of film and overall mass transfer coefficients
- Solve problems in batch and continuous multi-stage liquid-liquid extraction
- Solve problems for gas absorption in packed columns
- Solve problems in flash and batch distillation and understand the concept of reflux
