  • To provide the student with an overview of modern research and industrial applications of animal cell biology
  • To provide an appreciation of the applications of animal cell culture and related technologies and their applications in industry, research and medicine.


Learning Outcomes
  • The understanding of and familiarity with the main industrial, research, and biomedical ideas and applications associated with animal cell biology.

Indicative Syllabus
  • Research, clinical and industrial applications of animal cell culture, including:
  • Cell and Tissue Engineering· Scale-up of animal cell culture
  • Mechanisms of drug resistance and cell death
  • Differentiation of animal/human cells
  • Animal cell culture techniques relevant to mRNA knockdown (e.g. antisense andribozyme technology)
  • How animal cells regulate gene expression, with emphasis on translational control
