Module Aims

To provide the student with an overview of modern research and industrial applications of animal cell biology
To provide an appreciation of the applications of animal cell culture and related technologies and their applications in industry, research and medicine.

Learning Outcomes

The understanding of and familiarity with the main industrial, research, and biomedical ideas and applications associated with animal cell biology.

Indicative Syllabus

Research, clinical and industrial applications of animal cell culture, including:
Cell and Tissue Engineering· Scale-up of animal cell culture
Mechanisms of drug resistance and cell death
Differentiation of animal/human cells
Animal cell culture techniques relevant to mRNA knockdown (e.g. antisense andribozyme technology)
How animal cells regulate gene expression, with emphasis on translational control
