Module Aims

1. To evaluate the relationship between nutrient intake and exercise performance.
2. To understand the role of nutritional supplementation in performance enhancement.



Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of the course students will be able to:
• Devise appropriate nutritional strategies for athletes before, during and after exercise
• Determine the benefits and limitations of nutritional supplements for exercise performance
• Explain the physiological processes regulating nutrient metabolism and the impact on human performance

Indicative Syllabus

Water, hydration and exercise
Electrolytes and sports drinks (composition and benefit)
Carbohydrate ingestion and performance – including substrate utilisation during exercise
Exercise performance
• Pre-exercise feedings
• Substrate utilisation during exercise (Glucose/FFA cycle)
• Energy intake during exercise
• Post-exercise recovery
Antioxidant supplementation and exercise
Ergogenic Aids (Protein, BCAA, Creatine, Caffeine, Bicarbonate, Glycerol)
DHEA and other steroid hormone promoters
Nutritional enhancement of endocrine action (including the timing, quantity and composition of food)
Making weight in sport – appropriate nutritional approaches
Female athlete triad (Iron status, calcium and menstruation)
Vegetarian athlete
Nutrition and environment (heat, altitude)
