Description

This course is an introduction to contemporary Irish writing. It will enable students from abroad coming to the subject for the first time to study a range of literary works and film.

Learning Outcomes

1. demonstrate a knowledge of the key literary developments in twentieth century Ireland and also an understanding of the background to these events
2. relate in an informed and sensitive manner to the social, political and cultural contexts of the works studied
3. construct a vision of life in Ireland and of the Irish people in the twentieth century through their reading of novels, short stories and through film.
4. critique and evaluate the effectiveness of the narrative techniques employed in the novels and short stories discussed
