Description Advanced Harmony and Orchestration (Compositional Skills Portfolio) This module extends the study of the harmonic and contrapuntal language of style of years 1,2 and 3, and covers the language of late nineteenth and twentieth century music. The module involves the application of the information thus acquired in the compilation of a composition portfolio. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Outcomes 1. Develop an understanding and appreciation of harmony and counterpoint in the Classical/Romantic/Contemporary idiom. 2. Acquire literacy and compositional skills using the harmonic and contrapuntal resources of this period. 3. Present the compositional portfolio in HMUS401 using Music Programmes such as Finale or Sibelius. 4. Learning Activities Orchestration:Orchestration in the Masters; Laying out a score; transcription from short score to open score. Instrumental range and combinations. The school orchestra: orchestrating music for school ensembles.Vocal Writing:Setting of text for S.A.T.B. Using extended harmonic resources including advanced modulation and chromatic harmony.The Writing of String Quartets:Examining the repertoire; constructing a Minuet/movement for string quartet.Original composition in Twentieth Century Style:New forms and new techniques; Serial and minimalist styles; electronic media. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
