Description The purpose of this module is to sensitize students' awareness of their writing skills in English for both translation and academic writing purposes. Students will be made aware of common errors in English (frequently made even by competent writers in English) and they will learn about the expectations for academic writing in preparation for assessments and dissertations. An important component of the module is to instill in students a knowledge of the research methods that are commonly used in translation studies. Both quantitative and qualitative methods will be introduced and explained. Students will be expected to make use of what they learn in this module for all assessments and, in particular, for writing a dissertation proposal and, subsequently, for designing their dissertation research. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Outcomes 1. Locate and evaluate the relevance of scholarly works on research topics in Translation Studies. 2. Write a coherent research proposal for post-graduate level research in Translation Studies. 3. Identify and evaluate the most appropriate methods for investigating different research questions. 4. Evaluate information sources and utilise advanced features of library databases. 5. Evaluate student's own writing for text linguistic properties such as cohesion and coherence. 6. Attain a suitable level of academic writing appropriate to a post-graduate programme. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
