Description To increase the theoretical knowledge base of students who care for children and their families with Diabetes Mellitus and other forms of diabetes. To further the students practical knowledge and clinical skills in the nursing care and management of children with diabetes and their families. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate the ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate appropriate evidence based care in the nursing management of children with diabetes in the healthcare setting and in the community 2. Critically examine the pathophysiological processes associated with diabetes in childhood and relate them to the delivery of nursing care. 3. Explore the application of the pharmacological support and its delivery systems as utilised in the treatment of childhood diabetes 4. Critically analyse the social, economic, psychological and emotional impact on the child and family of a chronic illness and the importance of family centered care in meeting the holistic needs of each child and their family 5. Evaluate the role of the children s nurse in meeting the health promotion and education needs of the child with childhood diabetes along the life continuum | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
