Description
Students will be required to carry out a body of novel and independent research within the school environment. The topic and structure of this research will be negotiated and designed with the assigned tutor/supervisor, though the two options below offer broad guidelines.
1. Physical Education Research:
Students should identify a research question based on the school environment or in sport in general. This may be relating to athletes, general public, teachers or pupils, to individuals or groups, to a single school or to a group of schools or to any sporting environment. Students may work individually, or in small groups if the depth of research is sufficient to warrant more than one researcher. Research may be qualitative or quantitative in nature. The topic and structure of this research should be negotiated with the assigned tutor. At the end of the 12-week research period (Semester 7), students will complete a Research Dissertation (to take the form of a paper). The topic, structure and resulting research paper will be negotiated with the assigned tutor. A formal presentation to the class and staff will also form part of the assessment.
2. Biology Research relating to Physical Education:
Students will work in groups or individually to study an aspect of biological interest to human physiology and its relation to physical education. Students will work in the laboratories learning the techniques and applying these principles to a small study. The lecturers involved will directly supervise work. At the end of the 12-week research period (Semester 7) in the labs, students will complete a Research Dissertation (to take the form of a paper). The topic, structure and resulting research paper will be negotiated with the assigned tutor. A formal presentation to the class and staff will also form part of the assessment.
