Description

This course covers the history and development of late nineteenth-century music; the principal forms, techniques and styles of twentieth century music; music in oppressive regimes; music and spirituality; the development of contemporary Irish music.

Learning Outcomes

1. Develop an understanding and appreciation of the forms and techniques of sacred and secular music in the twentieth century.
2. Acquire analytical skills through the study of prescribed works from contemporary music.
3. Engage in research into current trends in contemporary music.
4. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of theological and philosophical influences in music.
5. Develop a solid foundation for the teaching of historical and analytical perspectives in post-Romantic and contemporary music.

This module introduces the musical forms and techniques of contemporary music
Late Romanticism and the Symphony; Serialism; Minimalism; Modal influences in contemporary music; Music and the Third Reich; Music and Spirituality in contemporary composers' works.
