Description

This module focuses on the needs of children experiencing ill health cared for in a variety of health care settings. Students will have the opportunity to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the nursing care of the child experiencing ill health in partnership with the family.

Learning Outcomes

1. Describe the pathophysiological changes in the child during childhood illness
2. Plan care in partnership with the child and their family in conjunction with the interdisciplinary team in a variety of health care settings
3. Explain the evidence based principles of assessment and management of pain in children along the age continuum
4. Appraise care provided for children with complex health needs
5. Explore the need to support the child and family in their experience of ill health

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Pathophysiological changes in the child with childhood illness in relation to alterations in respiratory and gastrointestinal function.

Introduction to pain assessment and management in children

Impact of hospitalisation on the child and family. Family centred care, working in partnership with the child and family.

Nursing assessment strategies, care planning and delivery techniques, evaluation of care.

Relevant clinial skills required when caring for a child with acute/ chronic respiratory and gastrointestional dysfunction.

Effects of childhood illness on the child and their family.

Facilitation of play & education for the child in a variety of health care settings.
