Description

The purpose of this module is to provide students with a broad overview of human resource management (HRM). It has been designed to help students develop a theoretical and practical insight into current practices in HRM. In this module students will develop knowledge of key human resource management processes and practices (for example, recruitment and selection of staff, performance and reward management, and training and development). The module also enables students to make more informed career decisions and thus prepare effectively for future employment opportunities. Students are expected to attend lectures, prepare for and contribute to class discussions.

Learning Outcomes

1. Describe the nature and scope of Human Resource Management (HRM) and its importance to the effective management of organisations.
2. Describe the basic functional areas of HRM within a range of organisational contexts.
3. Discuss the range of environmental factors influencing HRM practice.
4. Identify and discuss contemporary and future HR trends in the workplace.
5. Explain how concepts from HRM theory can be applied to meet the needs of organisations.
6. Evaluate their key skills, competencies and work experience through the completion of a personal development portfolio.

Theoretical explanations and empirical evidence on the impact of HRM practices on organizational performance.

The process of attracting and assessing potential candidates for employment.

Training and Development
The importance, role and nature of training and development. Learning. Career development.

Managing and Rewarding Performance
Performance management, appraisal, reward management.

Employee voice
Mechanisms of employee participation in decision-making.

Contemporary Issues and Debates in HRM
Current trends and developments in the field of HRM.
