Description

To understand the design and operation of bioreactors as well as techniques for removal of cells, disruption of cells and separation of cell debris.

Learning Outcomes

1. Understand bioreactor design and operation including Process Analytical Technologies (PAT)
2. Understand simple PID control and be able to simulate same with Polymath
3. Be able to apply engineering principles to heat, mass transfer and momentum transfer in bioreactors
4. Determine scale-up effects in bioreactor processes
5. Discuss and analyse the operation of cell disruption techniques
6. Formulate and apply equations for dead-end and crossflow filtration
7. Formulate and apply equations for centrifugation.
