Description

This module sets the level A2+ from the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) as its minimum exit level. It aims to consolidate language competence and fluency with particular emphasis on the quality of spoken production, including pronunciation and intonation. Reading comprehension and written skills are also reinforced through reading newspaper articles and using on line language resources. Awareness and knowledge of key aspects of current affairs in contemporary France and the Francophone world are increased. In addition, team work and oral presentation skills are practised through the various class assignments.

Learning Outcomes

1. Extract meaning from a wide range of newspaper articles, identifying key-words, structure and main points.
2. Retrieve relevant information from authentic audiovisual sources in French on chosen topics.
3. Demonstrate the ability to express his/her point of view in short written answers or in oral interaction with a degree of accuracy appropriate for this level.
4. Perform an informative group oral presentation on a chosen topic.
5. Participate effectively in a group discussion on a chosen topic with a degree of accuracy, spontaneity and fluency appropriate for this level.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Format
The course is conducted through French. Classroom sessions are interactive and learner-centered. Students are expected to attend and contribute to all sessions. They are also expected to engage in online language learning activities on a regular basis.

Syllabus
The syllabus focuses on increasing the language fluency and accuracy as well as covering some cultural aspects and current affairs topics through a variety of tasks, class activities and group projects.

Class activities
Students will be asked to work in pairs/groups and complete a variety of language assignments/tasks. These can include but are not limited to:presentations of a current affairs topic based on newspaper articles and audiovisual media resources, written and audiovisual comprehension exercises based on digital resources, organising debates on a prepared topic, devising and preparing specific language exercises for class use.
