Description

This module concerns the history and development of late nineteenth-century music; the principal forms, techniques and styles of twentieth-century music; music in its political and cultural context in Europe and the United States; the relationship of music and other arts; the development of contemporary Irish music; Irish traditional music.

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the forms, techniques and aesthetics of music in the late-nineteenth and the twentieth century.
2. Display analytical and literacy skills acquired through the study of prescribed works from the period.
3. Engage in research into current trends in contemporary music in Ireland, Europe and the U.S.
4. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of cultural and philosophical influences on compositional ideals.
5. Build on a solid foundation for the teaching of historical and analytical perspectives in late-Romantic and contemporary music.

This module explores the musical forms, styles and techniques of late-Romantic and twentieth-century music, and contemporary Irish music.
Late Romanticism; Forms of expression: Impressionism, Neo-Classicism, Atonality, Minimalism; Electronic Music; Twentieth-Century Philosophies of Music; Music and minority groups.
