Description

This module is focused upon the meanings of mental health and illness as well as how persons manage to survive and progress in the face of psychiatric distress.

Learning Outcomes

1. Compare and contrast varying perspectives on the nature of mental health and illness
2. Explore the significance of mental illness within persons' lives
3. Discuss the relevance of strengths-oriented concepts to professional practice in mental healthcare
4. Employ language and concepts commonly used by mental healthcare professionals to account for mental health problems
5. Explore how persons survive mental illness and make positive chnages in their lives

Developing a mental health perspective

Strengths, resources and mental health. Positive psychology- optimism, hope, humour, resilience. Solution-focused concepts- exceptions to problems, prior achievements, goaling. Motivation and stages of change. Survival and enduring.
