Description

This module will help students attain a Lower Advanced level of English in order to be able to participate in undergraduate courses at university. There will be a focus on developing students' general speaking, listening and reading skills; on widening students' vocabulary range; on improving their pronunciation skills; and on gaining mastery of grammatical structures and functions in English. A key aim of the module is to raise students' awareness of cultural differences and to develop the skills needed to interact effectively with members of different cultures. The minimum exit level for this module is B2:1 (CEFR). Compulsory Attendance: Module FC001 requires that students attend at least 80% of lectures. Where a student fails to do so, and in the absence of documentation to support extenuating circumstances, s/he will be required to present for a meeting with the Programme Chair, SALIS Teaching Convenor and/ or Module Coordinator in advance of attempting examinations/ assessments and/ or submitting coursework

Learning Outcomes

1. employ a good level of linguistic knowledge when speaking in English so that effective communication can take place on a wide range of topics in moderately complex situations
2. identify key points when reading and listening to a variety of text types and accents.
3. describe and critically examine the key issues involved in understanding cultural diversity
4. demonstrate an appreciation of what is involved in adapting to a new cultural environment
5. participate effectively in team-based projects

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Through texts and discussion points relating to cultural variability, students will develop their intercultural competence and communication skills. Students will be given opportunities to practise existing language in addition to extending and refining their ability to use that language. Language points, phonological issues and lexical items will be dealt with as they arise from the texts and tasks
