Description

The purpose of this module is to introduce students to elements of the global physical environment and human interaction with this through the examination of hazards. Every so often, the earth reminds us that the ground beneath our feet is not as solid as we might like to think. This module will look at why these events, and others like them, occur, and what we can do to minimise human risk. In this module students develop knowledge and skills in global seismic hazards, general global oceanography, weathering and erosion and river environments. The module is taught around learning statements with associated in-class activities within a lecture-format, supported by in-class assessment for learning throughout. Students are expected to attend and engage in the module.

Learning Outcomes

1. Identify and explain the key processes that create our physical landscape, in terms of plate tectonics and rivers
2. Distinguish key features of the global oceans
3. Identify some ways of how the physical landscape impacts on human lives and how we can minimize this risk
4. Identify some aspects of human’s impact on the landscape
5. Give examples of how land use planning can be used in the prevention of global hazards

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Rock formation: the rock cycle, rock uses and hazards

The Unstable Earth: Global seismic hazards, earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunami

Our interaction with these, and how we can prevent loss of life

The Global Ocean: General ocean science, tides, the geomorphology of the ocean floor, the effect of wind circulation on global ocean currents, hazards associated with oceans (coastal management, storm surges, flooding, subsistence and tsunamis)

Rock denudation, weathering and mass movement: Subsidence, chemical and mechanical weathering, avalanches, bog bursts and landslides, land planning around issues of mass wasting in Ireland and globally

River environments: Introduction to fluvial environments, human interaction with Irish rivers historically, causes of river flooding, land use planning for flood prevention
