Description

This module is designed to facilitate engagement with the contemporary issues pertinent to the field of psychotherapy in the 21st century and the candidates’ own positions within that filed. Candidates will be encouraged to broaden their awareness of professional issues related to the advanced practice of psychotherapy and deepen their knowledge of contemporary issues within this and related fields. Candidates will contribute to their learning plan through sharing their own expertise and identifying gaps in their knowledge, reflect on ethical practice in varying contexts. The module aims to assist candidates to articulate and critically examine their own professional practice in the light of recent developments within the discipline. Through independent study, candidates will engage in a depth of reading, reflection and critical appraisal of theory, research and practice with respect to contemporary issues in psychotherapy. It will develop candidates’ knowledge base and competence as advanced practitioners in the field of psychotherapy in Ireland.

Learning Outcomes

1. Critically discuss developments within the profession and challenges facing the profession in the 21st century.
2. Critically appraise recent theory, research and practice developments in the contemporary field of psychotherapy taking account of both national and international developments in the field and the various contexts of psychotherapy practice.
3. Establish their own position as advanced practitioners in their field of practice and be able to communicate this position in an articulate effective manner.
4. Critically discuss and develop responses to complex ethical dilemmae in their practice.
5. Critically appraise a range of delivery models in psychotherapy in diverse social, cultural and legal contexts with diverse populations.
6. Reflect on and offer a constructive critique of their own practice and the practice of others.
