Description

This module is designed to provide students with opportunities to examine the concepts of leadership and management with a view towards developing a shared understanding of the relationship, similarities and differences between the role of a manager and that of a leader. There is a particular emphasis on student teachers interrogating their understanding of leadership as conceptualised in an early childhood setting and displaying their capacity to apply their leadership skills therein. The roles, responsibilities and functions of the early childhood leader as they relate to contemporary policy in the area are addressed. The communication and interpersonal skills which are recognised as the foundations of leadership in an early childhood setting are identified. The challenges of leading multi-agency teams and working in partnership with parents are explored. The administration of early childhood settings in accordance with the profession’s ethical principles and relevant codes of practice are discussed.
