Description

This course charts the history of Medieval Ireland from the arrival of the Normans (1169) to the beginning of the Tudor conquest (1534). Ecclesiastical, political and settlement history is examined using a multi-disciplinary approach and the widest possible range of contemporary sources including official records, manorial extents and archaeology. Students will attain a broad understanding of the political, ideological and economic forces that shaped Medieval Ireland.

Learning Outcomes

1. Identify the key developments in Medieval Irish history.
2. Comprehend and analyse the underlying reasons for and consequences of political, social, economic and cultural change.
3. Engage critically with prescribed readings and a wide range of primary source material.
4. Construct an objective and well-presented written argument based on a broad range of historical evidence.
5. Engage in self-directed learning by specialising in areas of personal interest.
