Description

This module will provide students with a comprehensive overview of the issues faced by newly arrived forced migrants. It will look at existing integration policies in Ireland and at the different ways in which refugee relocation and empowerment can take place, as well as strategies to combat prejudices and racism against refugees and asylum seekers. This module will be delivered with input from NGOs and practitioners working with refugees and asylum seekers.

Learning Outcomes

1. Show an awareness of the different issues faced by refugees and asylum seekers upon arrival in the host society
2. Be capable of identifying and responding to the needs of newly arrived refugees and asylum seekers
3. Put in place strategies to combat stereotyping and racism through effective awareness raising and advocacy
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of empowering newly arrived populations and of different ways to achieve this.
5. Analyse the work carried out by frontline workers and NGOs working with refugees and asylum seekers
