Description

This module develops a wide range of practical musical skills in Performance, Keyboard Harmony, Choral Conducting and Music Technology. The module includes individual instrumental/vocal tuition via subsidised on-site lessons through the Artane School of Music

Learning Outcomes

1. Display musical perception and proficiency in aural training, keyboard harmony, instrumental and vocal performance, and sight-reading.
2. Demonstrate their musicianship through the development of technological skills using MT software, e.g. Finale; Audacity; MuseScore
3. Use interpersonal skills acquired through group music-making and performance organisation
4. Adapt all competencies acquired in the module to the teaching context.
5. Display advance knowledge of musical style.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Music Technology
Understanding MIDI: working with MIDI Files; MIDI on the Internet; Using Finale: preparing a Lead Sheet; playback of scores; extracting parts. Working with Band in a Box: recording /constructing songs; using different styles/instruments; mixing down to CD; converting and editing files using Audacity.

Music Performance/Musicianship
Listening skills:aural perception; dictation; Keyboard harmony: Improvisation; Harmonisation of melodies/hymn tunes at the keyboard; Score reduction; piano accompaniment; Instrumental performance and sight-reading; Choral Conducting: beat patterns, expression, showing dynamics, score analysis and preparation; rehearsal technique, warm-ups.
