Description

The module aims to equip participants with the required knowledge and skills necessary to utilise and promote evidence-based practice (EBP) within their workplace settings. Key aspects of focus include the evolution of nursing knowledge, origins of EBP including the seven steps of the EBP process; research supported strategies for implementing and sustaining EBP in real world settings; improvement science; clinical guidelines and outcome measurement strategies. The module will incorporate a variety of teaching, learning and assessment strategies designed to harness student capability for sustained integration of EBP in practice.

Learning Outcomes

1. Deliberate the origins and nature of nursing knowledge and how it is constructed.
2. Critically examine the evolution and importance of evidence-based practice in nursing.
3. Formulate searchable, answerable practice related questions to inform decision-making based on the steps of the evidence-based practice process.
4. Interrogate the best available evidence incorporating clinical expertise and patient preferences (where applicable) to underpin decision-making.
5. Critically appraise strategies to enable the integration of evidence into practice incorporating own expertise and client preferences.
6. Determine mechanisms to measure and evaluate the contribution of best available evidence to inform care options and maximise patient outcomes.
7. Recognise obstacles and opportunities to promoting active engagement in EBP within healthcare settings.
