Description This module will engage with the Islamic encounter with and response to the phenomenon of modernity. The concept of modernity is, itself, a contested one – which some consider privileges Western industrialised societies – and as part of the module students will reflect on the ways in which Western scholarship has constructed Islam and Muslims. A range of Islamic responses to modernity will be examined through a close reading of selections from the writings of a number of Muslim thinkers, scholars, jurisprudents and theologians. The module will also demonstrate how Islam is not a monolithic homogeneous entity, but one that accommodates varied theological positions and tendencies. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
