Description

The module will focus on the listening and speaking skills necessary to meet the demands of undergraduate courses taught in an English-speaking academic environment. There will also be a focus on academic reading and writing skills as well as study and exam preparation skills. Students will develop their awareness of appropriacy and register in relation to their use of English in an academic environment. The minimum exit level for this module is B2:2 (CEFR) Compulsory Attendance: Module FC004 requires that students attend at least 80% of lectures. Where a student fails to do so, and in the absence of documentation to support extenuating circumstances, s/he will be required to present for a meeting with the Programme Chair, SALIS Teaching Convenor and/ or Module Coordinator in advance of attempting examinations/ assessments and/ or submitting coursework

Learning Outcomes

1. participate in discussions and make short oral presentations in an academic context
2. summarise the main points of detailed academic texts
3. process aural discourse effectively in order to understand the main points of spoken English when used in lectures, seminars and other academic contexts
4. use the conventions of academic discourse in relation to citing and referencing and avoiding plagiarism
5. discriminate between different registers and select the most appropriate language for academic purposes
6. describe their preferred study habits and exam preparation techniques

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Using a variety of academic listening and reading texts, students will be given extensive practice in all four skills in an integrated fashion. However, in this module particular attention will be paid to the development of academic listening and speaking skills. Specific strategies for dealing with academic texts effectively will be focused on and students will be encouraged to refine their ability to display their knowledge effectively. Students will reflect on their current study skills and exam preparation techniques and encouraged to experiment with alternative techniques and approaches.
