Description

This module aims to provide students to strong basic knowledge of the language and culture of Spain and Latin America. The course will enable students to understand and use basic structures of Spanish grammar, vocabulary and expressions to communicate in a range of everyday situations. Students will be guided to develop language learning strategies and autonomous language learning skills. Students are required to attend at least 80% of lectures.

Learning Outcomes

1. Understand basic structures and short texts that contain the most frequently used vocabulary and increasingly complex syntax.
2. Produce short texts, for example personal emails, and write short basic description of events, [present and past] activities and personal experiences.
3. Demonstrate control of basic as well as increasingly complex grammatical structures (e.g. word order in main and subordinate clauses, the use of genders and cases, adjectival endings).
4. Extract information from a variety of basic written texts.
5. Understand spoken phrases and simple messages in everyday contexts.
6. Demonstrate effective basic oral skills in a range of social situations such as introduce yourself and other people, talk about your family and daily routine
7. Continue identifying economic, social and cultural similarities and differences between Ireland and Hispanic-speaking countries.
8. Use IT skills in Spanish to access language-specific resources (Life-long Learning)
9. Use IT skills in Spanish, where IT literacy skills will include word processing and web search

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

The content of the module is in line with the CEFR for Languages to level A2
Students will engage with basic written structures and texts and also carry out reading and listening comprehension exercises. They will communicate orally practicing different role-plays working in pairs.
