Description

This unit aims to develop students’ understanding of business and media cultures across the world and how these are reflected in language use. Topics will be discussed, where appropriate, with references to various cultures in comparison to Irish culture. The module explores different ways in which social and cultural norms are realised in language use, particularly in professional environments. This module takes a contrastive perspective between the targeted cultures and languages and Irish culture and languages. One of the goals of this module is to help students distinguish fact from opinion, identify point of view and objectivity, understand bias, and recognize multiple perspectives in the media.
