Description

This module introduces trainee translators to the practice and business of localisation. The course gives a profile of the industry and the core activities that linguists engage in, including project management, translation quality assessment and web localisation.

Learning Outcomes

1. Document coherently the localisation process, its content production and translation challenges and solutions.
2. Critically discuss the pros and cons of typical translation aids used in the localisation process.
3. Critically assess requirements for web localisation.
4. Understand the role and process of Translation Quality Assessment in Localisation.
5. Understand the importance of structured content production for localisation.

Introduction to Software Localisation
Overview of the global industry.

The use of translation tools in localisation
Students will learn about how language technology plays a significant role in localisation.

Localisation project management
Students will learn about workflow and typical project management issues in localisation.

Translation Quality Assessment
Students will learn how translation quality is typically assessed in localisation.

Technical Communication
Students will have an introduction to the topic of Technical Communication and how this plays an important role in localisation.

Web Localisation
Students will learn about the importance of web sites for global business and the challenges involved in localising web sites.
