Description

This module expands the language studied in ASE1, and and will continue to build learners’ skills for performing in ensembles at a high professional level in the world of contemporary jazz. The module will expose the learners to typical repertoire from the contemporary jazz field and delve into the techniques, both technical and conceptual, typically used in the world of jazz and contemporary music performance, and in particular in the music of Wayne Shorter, European jazz composers, and Afro-Cuban music. The module will also develop techniques for incorporating singers into the contemporary jazz ensemble

Learning Outcomes

1. Competently perform in a wide range of contemporary jazz music covering various stylistic areas
2. Be familiar with Afro-Cuban music, the music of European Jazz Composers, the music of Wayne Shorter, and other contemporary repertoire
3. Expand their technical and expressive vocabulary
4. Develop techniques for effective working with singers
5. Singers will gain insights in how to perform effectively within the contemporary ensemble framework

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Repertoire Ensemble
Repertoire containing structures, chords, rhythms and grooves taken from Afro-Cuban music, Hard Bop and the music of Wayne Shorter, as well as repertoire specially tailored for vocalists. Learning this repertoire will give an insight into various techniques and contemporary styles such as: ° The use of claves in Afro-Cuban Music ° Accompaniment styles in Afro-Cuban music ° Classic Hard Bop performance practices ° Using chromatic harmony in ensemble improvisation settings ° Classic compositions by Wayne Shorter ° Accompaniment techniques useful in ensemble situations that contain singers ° Contemporary jazz funk repertoire
