Description

This module will enable students to develop their graduate research project by critical reference to a particular workshop on qualitative research methods. This module is run as part of the Qualitative Research Summer organised by the School of Nursing and Human Sciences in DCU. The Qualitative Research Summer School is aimed at multidisciplinary qualitative researchers (e.g. healthcare, social sciences, business, education and related fields) and consists of a number of methodology workshops run over one week in May/June each year. Each workshop, run over one or two days, is led by an established international figure in their field of qualitative research and attended by participants with a particular interest in that field. The Summer School is run by the module coordinator assigned by the SNHS and supported by a committee of academic staff with strong backgrounds in qualitative research. There will be some variability in Summer School content from year to year depending on the availability of international workshop leaders and their area of expertise, and trends in qualitative research.

Learning Outcomes

1. Appraise the key principles and approaches that were the focus for a particular workshop on qualitative research methods
2. Articulate the relevance of these principles and approaches for their own graduate research project
3. Critically appraise their own graduate research in the light of learning points drawn from the workshop
4. Critically evaluate the implications of these learning points for the future development of their graduate research project

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Workshop topics
The module will be delivered through a series of one and two-day workshops. Each workshop will be led by an established international figure in their field of qualitative research and attended by participants with a particular interest in that field. Students will attend workshops that are relevant to their dissertation. While the specific workshops available each year may vary depending on the international workshop leaders and their specific areas of expertise, the workshops will address key qualitative research methods including, though not confined to the following areas: • Grounded theory • Phenomenology (IPA, Hermeneutic) • Ethnography • Narrative research methods • Case study research • Action research • Mixed Methods • Interviewing qualitatively • Analysing qualitative data • Designing qualitative projects • Writing and publishing qualitative research • Rigour in qualitative research It is the intention of the SNHS, the module coordinator and the organising committee to be responsive to emerging trends in qualitative research and to endeavour to include workshops to meet emerging needs where possible.
