Description

This module, conducted in the target language, is aimed at advanced learners, who are returning from their year abroad who wish to further develop their oral and written skills for academic and professional purposes. Students will engage in a series of tasks to foster comprehension, production, interaction and mediation skills. Throughout the academic year, students will analyse a series of multimodal texts (videos, podcasts, news reports, etc.) on current affairs relevant to Hispanic cultures. These texts will be discussed and debated orally with a view to improving fluency, accuracy and lexical control. Additionally, students will engage in the creation of original multimodal texts both individually and in groups, which will show not only their ability to use the Spanish language with a high degree of precision but their capacity for critical analysis and their cultural awareness.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Language Practice
This module is organized around weekly meetings. All tasks lay emphasis on fluency, linguistic accuracy, pragmatic competence and critical analysis. Taking into account the needs and interests of the class, these tasks include: (a) the study and use of contemporary vocabulary, advanced grammar and styles related to genres and registers encountered in a variety of current affairs texts and media; (b) weekly practice of listening and reading skills through comprehension exercises based on advanced level podcasts, broadcasts, films, news reports, articles; (c) the exploration and guided discussion in small groups of social, political and cultural issues related to the target language context; (d) the production of oral and written tasks (such as vlogs, argumentative essays, news reports, etc.).

Methodology
Because the module will follow a flipped approach to instruction, it is essential that students complete the assigned work before class in order to be able to participate in class discussions.

Work format
Coursework involves individual and pair/group work to complete oral and written tasks. Students will need to communicate with classmates during class as well as outside our timetabled sessions in order to complete group tasks and assignments.

Beyond the classroom
Students are expected to take responsibility for their own language learning by looking for language learning opportunities and engaging in language practice outside of class.
